The Shenzhen Research Institute of Shantou University Medical College held its inauguration ceremony in Longgang on March 24. Local government officials, including District Mayor Wang Cefei, attended the event.
The launch upgrades the long-standing cooperation between Shantou University Medical College and Longgang. Their partnership is shifting from clinical teaching to a full-spectrum innovation framework covering research and development, clinical trials, industrial incubation and talent training. The institute will prioritize AI-enabled research in healthcare and optometry.
Biopharma is a core strategic industry for Longgang and Shenzhen. By 2025, the district has gathered 445 medical device firms and 37 pharmaceutical R&D and production enterprises. The biopharma sector generated 6.15 billion yuan ($849 million) in added value and 27.41billion yuan in total output value.
The institute will partner with Longgang's AI and Life and Health Industrial Park to provide one-stop services for related enterprises. It aims to shorten clinical trial approval time to 25 days or less, serve over 50 enterprises annually and accelerate the commercialization of innovative drugs and medical devices. Longgang government pledges full support to build it as a benchmark for university-district collaboration.
