On the afternoon of July 25, The State Council Information Office of the PRC held a news conference on the preparation for the upcoming 15th National Games.
According to the introduction, the opening ceremony of The 15th National Games is scheduled to happen in Guangzhou of south China’s Guangdong Province on November 9, while the closing ceremony is due to occur in Shenzhen of Guangdong Province on November 21. It is estimated that over 15,000 athletes would participate in the finals of the 419 events of the 34 competitive sports, with 57 events among them held before the opening ceremony. And, around 11,000 athletes are estimated to participate in the finals of the 166 events across the 23 mass sports competitions, 148 events of which shall be held before the opening ceremony.
Tong Lixin, deputy director of the Organizing Committee of The 15th National Games and deputy director of General Administration of Sport of China, expressed at the news conference that 19 cities, including Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Hong Kong, Macao, are appointed for holding the events of the National Games, considered the characteristics of the cities and sports. The arrangement is based on the principle that Guangdong Province should be the main host, while Hong Kong and Macao should be given priority and respected. In detail, Hong Kong shall host 39 events of 8 competitive sports and 6 events of 1 mass sports competition. Macao shall host 14 events of 4 competitive sports and 8 events of 1 mass sport competition.
Currently, the renovation of the appointed venues has been completed. The general schedule of the 15th National Games has been released. Half of 67 testing events have finished. The mass sports competitions are in full swing. Millions of persons participate in the preliminaries and the activities themed “Mass Participation in the 15th National Games”, according to Tong.
