Located in the Central City of Longgang and adjacent to the People’s Government of Longgang district, Red Cube of Shenzhen is a key cultural project of Longgang.

As an important livelihood initiative for building a culturally strong Shenzhen and delivering cultural benefits to the public, it has emerged as a new cultural landmark of Longgang.

It is Longgang’s first public cultural complex operated via government-enterprise cooperation that gives equal priority to cultural undertakings and cultural industries. The compound comprises the Longgang Science Museum, Youth Palace, Public Art Gallery and Urban Planning Pavilion. Tailored to urban development needs, it integrates public literacy improvement with urban culture display.

Centered on public education, it blends science, personality cultivation, art and urban essence. Serving as a public education base that integrates ideological guidance, cultural inheritance and quality-oriented education, it operates in a professional, standardized and public welfare-oriented manner for all citizens.

Upholding the tenet of Four Pavilions Interactive & Public Welfare Engagement, it builds a platform for active and inquiry-based learning. Focusing on four major sectors including themed exhibitions, cultural events, public education and cultural services, it develops its brand by introducing high-quality cultural resources and key projects, offering diverse visiting experiences and cultural services to the public.

Committed to delivering rich visiting experiences and featured cultural services, Red Cube strives to write a new chapter featuring the integration of science and art, the coordinated development of culture and industry, as well as the resonance between inheritance and innovation. It disseminates the essence of culture and art and advocates a new lifestyle featuring science and technology.

1. Longgang Science Museum Boasting a total construction area of 10,000 square meters, the museum is laid out following the process of Understanding, Exploration, Transformation and Innovation of Science and Technology. It fully presents basic principles and methodologies of science and technology, major paths of scientific exploration and future development trends of cutting-edge technologies. The museum features five all-age exhibition zones: Fundamentals of Science, Boom of Industry, Journey of Scientific Innovation, Mystery of Life and Dream of the Universe. In light of the local population structure, it also sets up the Idea Park themed on children’s scientific exploration. Public classrooms including Curie’s Cottage, Newton’s Classroom, Halley’s Classroom and Zhangjiu Hall are available, hosting regular parent-science activities, popular science lectures and science shows.

Over 300 exhibits are on display, 80 percent of which are interactive installations covering 80 percent of basic scientific knowledge for primary and secondary schools, alongside a selection of frontier technologies. In view of Longgang’s robust high-tech industry cluster, interactive exhibits on new energy vehicles, electronic communications and other fields are specially arranged. The Southern Academy of Space Technology based in Longgang has custom-built exhibits such as space station and Mars base, and donated in-orbit spacesuits – a rare highlight among domestic science museums.

2. Longgang Youth Palace With a construction area of 8,000 sq m, the Youth Palace serves the general public and young people. It functions as a comprehensive off-campus education hub integrating ideological guidance, cultural inheritance and quality-oriented education. Adhering to the principles of public welfare, practicality and education, it puts social responsibility in the first place.

Guided by the core socialist values, it creates more opportunities for young people to participate, practice and interact, and builds a learning and exchange platform connecting families, schools and the society. It gives full play to its public welfare and social education functions through exhibitions, experience activities, education lectures and various competitions. Functional spaces are optimized to create a relaxed and warm atmosphere. All exhibition areas are designed to be flexible, modular and multi-functional.

3. Public Art Gallery Covering 7,500 sq m, the gallery is positioned on Inheritance and Innovation. It embraces a wide range of art genres to showcase the innovative development of culture and art, enabling the general public to appreciate artistic beauty and making art accessible to all.

It consists of three themed zones: the ever-renewing art and culture exchange zone for cultural inheritance, the immersive innovative design experience zone for art education, and the diverse interactive zone to energize art. A variety of spaces including the Liufa Platform for art exchanges, urban public sculptures, cultural and creative gift areas and art cafes are arranged to bring art closer to the community. It realizes the transformation of art exhibition from single space to diversified open spaces via the perfect combination of urban public spaces and art. Exhibitions are presented with new media and information technologies, accompanied by on-site professional explanations and a wide range of public education activities. Customized art workshops, themed lectures and experience courses are launched targeting visitors of different ages, interests and backgrounds.

4. Longgang Urban Planning Pavilion The pavilion has a construction area of approximately 6,000 sq m. It showcases the urban development course, major achievements and long-term planning of Longgang since its establishment in 1993.

Blending local cultural elements and development features, it presents Longgang as a hub for innovation, industry, culture, shared prosperity, people’s wellbeing and ecological progress, as well as a parlor of quality life in eastern Shenzhen.

Centering on the urban development timeline of Longgang, the pavilion is divided into four major sections – Sand Table Show, Impression of Longgang, Thriving Longgang and Dynamic Longgang – with 12 thematic modules in total. It displays Longgang’s history, overview, people’s livelihood and industrial development, presenting a city featuring cultural vitality and green growth.

Temporary exhibition areas and multi-functional halls are also available. With abundant displays and multi-dimensional interactive tech experiences, it serves as a comprehensive window for citizens to learn about and participate in urban construction, and fully demonstrates Longgang’s innovative industries, eco-friendly environment and pleasant urban life.
