Hehu New Residence is a cultural relic protection unit of Guangdong province. Nestled in Luoruihe Residential Group, Nanlian Community, Longgang district, Shenzhen, Guangdong province, it was built as a family compound by Luo Ruifeng, a Hakka migrant from Xingning, Guangdong. Construction started in the Qianlong reign of the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911), and the main complex was completed in the 22nd year of the Jiaqing reign (1796-1820).

In 1996, the former Longgang Town Government converted it into the Longgang Hakka Folk Museum. Today, it is rated a National Third-Class Museum, and also serves as Shenzhen Hehu Academy under Lingnan Academy, a popular photography destination in Guangdong, as well as Shenzhen’s Integrity Education Base, Overseas Chinese Cultural Exchange Base, Ideological and Political Education Base for Primary and Secondary Schools, and Family Tradition Practice Base.

Composed of a crescent pond, a threshing ground and the enclosed dwelling complex, Hehu New Residence covers a total area of around 25,000 square meters, ranking among the largest surviving Hakka walled villages across China. It embodies the architectural essence of Hakka enclosed houses from Fujian, Guangdong and Jiangxi, while incorporating design features of traditional Cantonese residences. As a quintessential example of castle-style Hakka dwellings in southern Guangdong, it is hailed as a living fossil of Hakka architecture and a historical witness to the Hakka people’s development of eastern Shenzhen. It provides invaluable materials for the research on Shenzhen’s history and ancient architecture.
