Longgang district is located in the northeast of Shenzhen in South China's Guangdong province, with an actual administrative area of 388.21 square kilometers. It comprises 11 sub-districts and 111 communities, with a permanent population of 3.979 million according to the seventh National Population Census, a registered population of 1.473 million, and an actual managed population of 4.8698 million. It is a major district in Shenzhen in terms of both population and industry.
Natural Environment
The district's forest and grass coverage rate has reached 50.52%. It has 331 parks, while the per capita park green space area amounts to 13.3 square meters. It has built 146.34 kilometers of waterway ecological corridors and 1,256 kilometers of greenways.
The district is interwoven with 54 main and tributary streams and dotted with 42 reservoirs, creating an environment where greenery is visible from windows and parks are within walking distance. It has successfully hosted several editions of the Shenzhen International Low Carbon City Forum and is among the first batch of carbon-neutral pilot demonstration areas in the province. It has been recognized as a "National Ecological Civilization Construction Demonstration Zone" and a national practice and innovation base for the concept of "lucid waters and lush mountains are invaluable assets".
Livelihood Facilities
The district has nearly 600,000 students in schools and about 39,000 full-time teachers. It is home to prestigious institutions like the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen and Shenzhen MSU-BIT University. Institutions like the National Graduate College for Engineers of the Southern University of Science and Technology are being rapidly constructed. The district has seven Grade-A tertiary hospitals, including four district-level tertiary hospitals, the highest number in the city. There are nine operational metro lines with 74 stations, totaling 192.1 kilometers. Longgang hosted the 26th Summer Universiade and boasts world-class sports facilities, including a stadium, a gymnasium, a natatorium, 11 museums, 381 immovable cultural relics, 57 intangible cultural heritage items, and one national 3A-level tourist attraction.
Industrial Base
Adhering to the strategy of developing the district through industry and prioritizing manufacturing, Longgang is home to 2,672 industrial enterprises above designated size and 50 listed companies, ranking first in the national top 100 industrial districts for eight consecutive years. It has formed four major industrial clusters worth over 100 billion yuan ($14.5 billion) each, in smart terminals, networking and communication, ultra-high-definition video displays, and modern fashion, featuring renowned companies like Huawei and BYD. The district has significant potential for industrial development, with the total amount of land consolidation and storage leading the city for many years. It has been recognized as one of the first national demonstration districts or counties for resource conservation and intensive use.
Innovation and Entrepreneurship
Longgang has been approved to jointly establish the National Ultra-High-Definition Video Innovation Center and has built the National Third-Generation Semiconductor Technology Innovation Center. The district leads the city in the proportion of total R&D investment to GDP and the number of PCT international patent applications. It has been recognized as a National Intellectual Property Demonstration Zone and hosts 3,720 national high-tech enterprises, two national key laboratories, three Nobel Prize laboratories, and 12 full-time academicians, with 364 innovation platforms at various levels. It ranked among the top five in the 2025 China Innovation Top 100 Districts.
Economic Performance
In 2025, Longgang's GDP was 609.592 billion yuan, with a year-on-year growth of 2.6%. The added value of industrial enterprises above designated size was 243.706 billion yuan, up 1.2%. The total retail sales of consumer goods reached 159.547 billion yuan, a growth of 1.9%, while fixed asset investment amounted to 125.22 billion yuan, a decline of 20.5%.
From January to February 2026, the GDP is expected to grow by about 12.5%, with industrial added value reaching 33.538 billion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 22.8%. Total retail sales of consumer goods are valued at 27.851 billion yuan, up 4.0%, while fixed asset investment sits at 11.91 billion yuan, down 8.8%.
