On the morning of Nov. 21, Shenzhen Medical Academy of Research and Translation (SMART) was inaugurated officially at Guangming Cloud Park International Convention Center.

It’s reported that Yan Ning -- a well-known scientist, would serve as the director of SMART. Han Qide -- an academician of China Academy of Sciences (CAS), an honorable chairman of China Association for Science and Technology (CAST) and the former director of Peking University Health Science Center (PKUHSC), Wang Zhizhen -- an academician of CAS and a researcher of Institute of Biophysics, CAS, Chen Zhu -- an academician of CAS and a tenured professor of Ruijin Hospital, Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, Qin Weizhong -- the deputy secretary of Shenzhen Committee of CPC and the Mayor of Shenzhen Municipality, and Yan Ning inaugurated SMART.
Through one year’s preparation, SMART begins to take shape now as steady progress has been made in the special fund management, site construction, talents attraction and cultivation, international exchange and cooperation and many other related fields.
It’s introduced that SMART is a high-end academic institution specialized in comprehensive medical research, talent cultivation and achievement transformation. SMART strives to build an innovation base for the integration of science, technology, talent and education, keeps need- and problem-oriented, encourages to make innovation from the source, concentrates on the leading edge and application, explores a wholly-new sci-tech system, gathers global specialized scientists, so as to build an international first-grade medical research platform and develop a globally-influential strategic medical science institution, which could have an influence in Shenzhen, GBA, even the whole China.
At the inauguration ceremony, Yan Ning put forward five development targets:
(1) Entrusting the management of multi-raised founds to legitimate organizations
(2) Removing the barrier between original innovation and clinical medicine
(3) Developing “medical scientists”
(4) Guaranteeing unworried process to drive scientific personnel
(5) Building a new ecology favorable for talent attraction, innovation and the integration of education and science
