The 12th National Games for Persons with Disabilities and the 9th National Special Olympic Games of the PRC concluded

On December 15, the 12th National Games for Persons with Disabilities and the 9th National Special Olympic Games of the PRC concluded in Shenzhen. As a showcase for the nation’s new achievements and breakthroughs that have been made in the field of the competitive sports for persons with disabilities, the Games broke 156 national records and over 15 world records for the sports events recorded, like athletics, swimming, shooting, weightlifting, cycling track.

As introduced by Chang Zheng, the vice director of the organizing committee of the Games and a Party member under China Disabled Persons’ Federation, among the 34 units participating in the Games, 32 ones won golds and 33 ones won metals for the Paralympic and Deaflympic events. As the hosts of the Games, Guangdong Province boasted its participation in all events of the Games and leading gold-winning achievements, Hong Kong participated in more events than ever to a ever-largest scale and made new breakthroughs, and Macao showed its excellent sports competence via its largest-size delegation team. The Games featured the increased Paralympic and mass-participation events, the furthest reach and the record-breaking number of participants, reflecting the nation’s achievements in the sports for persons with disabilities.’

According to the introduction, the Games were innovatively co-hosted by Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA). Being complementary to each other, the three regions across the GBA cooperatively made common deployment and took action to push the informatization and sci-tech development for the sake of the disabled while hosting the sports games, and to spread the integration of people with/without disabilities from the game venues to every corner of life, vividly exemplifying the in-depth integration and coordination in the GBA.

Chang also expressed that the GBA, filled with care and concern for the disabled, kept thoroughly the idea of hosting “the Games with love but barriers”, refining the accessible facilities at the venues and systematically improving the disabled assess across the area. With the whole society’s involvement in and assistance for the Games, the GBA prepared a “zero-barrier games area” for all groups at every age, which set a model than can be followed.
