The Canadian Women’s Hockey League (CWHL), a professional women’s ice hockey league, is holding its 2018-19 season matches in Shenzhen.

Established in 2007, the league comprises six teams: the Calgary Infernos, Toronto Furies, Les Canadiennes de Montreal and Markham Thunders from Canada, the Shenzhen KRS Vanke Rays from China and the Worcester Blades from the United States.

The Shenzhen KRS Vanke Rays was originally known as Kunlun Red Star WIH during their first season, but changed their name after the second Chinese team, the Vanke Rays, was shut down and merged with Red Star. The KRS Vanke Rays play home games at Shenzhen Universiade Sports Center.

On June 5, 2017, the CWHL was expanded to China with Kunlun Red Star WIH, a team controlled by Kunlun Red Star of the Kontinental Hockey League and the Vanke Rays. Each team is to play six games against its five rivals for a total of 30 games, 15 at home and 15 on the road.

China is developing its hockey teams in preparation for the 2022 Winter Olympics.
